Amazing Black British history books - part 2
Migration: Journeys through Black British History by Millie Mensah and illustrated by Camilla Ru
Migration is a great way to frame Black British history. There is so much to be gained from understanding that there is more to the migration of African people than the transatlantic enslavement and post-war migration. This book begins with the migration of African people to Britain during the Roman Empire - and I liked that it included the scientific research and evidence that underpins this - I know from just doing videos on Black British history that there is always someone who refuses to believe what is established to be scientific fact. It tells of how and why Africans came to Britain throughout British history, it deals with enslavement and the Africans involved in its abolishment. And it goes right through to the Black involvement in the world wars and beyond as they helped rebuild post-war Britain. It's beautifully illustrated, well-constructed and very interesting. I was also really amazed at a footnote explaining that this was the history of England, Scotland and Wales - and that the Black history of northern Ireland required a book in its own right - that blew my mind so I'm off to research that in a LOT more detail.
